Goodnow Building – Whole Person Headquarters
Exterior Façade Consultation & Historic Preservation Consulting
The Whole Person is a nonprofit organization that assists people with disabilities to live independently and provides support to individuals and families through a range of programs and services. The organization had outgrown their previous home and selected the historic Goodenow Textiles Factory Building for their new headquarters and offices. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 by STRATA, and was delighted to work once again on this significant Kansas City landmark building in 2011-13. Our firm worked in collaboration with 360 Architecture to complete an extensive exterior and interior rehabilitation to be sensitive to the historic structure, while bringing the building into the 21st Century with all of the required modern amenities, life safety and ADA requirements. Our work focused on the preservation of the historic building elements and the integration of new design features and systems within the historic context to capitalize on the opportunities the building provided including an abundance of natural lighting, open floor plan and the urban environment of the area. STRATA worked closely with 360 on the rehabilitation of the exterior shell of the building from schematic design through construction. We lead the historic masonry survey, drawings, recommendations and specifications for repointing, replacement and cleaning. We also assisted with the documentation of the existing historic windows and doors and worked closely with 360 and the general contractor on the selection, design and specification of historically-appropriate replacement windows, doors and storefront. STRATA worked closely with the general contractor throughout construction with regards to the window replacement and historic masonry restoration work.
